Post-Impressionism

Purpose: To gain a basic understanding about the Post-Impressionism Art Movement and to identify Artists who work(ed) in this style.

In the late 1880s, the Post-Impressionism movement was started by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat. They “pushed the boundaries of the style” in different, creative ways. Artists began to develop their own personal artistic styles for on expressing emotion instead of optical impressions. They focused more on on themes and portraying symbols. This new style and creativity laid the foundations for the art of the 20th century.

What I learned from the copy drawing is that impressionists use lot and lots of colors. It was hard to get the right color of the sky and water because the painting had so much color and light and reflections that to get all the colors but not necessarily blend them together was challenging. I also learned that the brush strokes should look loose and free, which was harder to do with cray pas, but not impossible. I think that over all I learned that there are many different qualities to impressionism that make it so interesting and free.
